El Calafate - Upsala Glacier
Estancia Cristina Discovery
Difficulty Level: moderate
Duration of the 4x4 trip: 3 hours
Grade slope: 550 masl. The tour includes a visit to the museum, an old shearing shed, where you will learn about the history of the Estancia. Then you will embark in a guided walk to the Caterina River and the chapel and enjoy a tour around the old compound of the Estancia. We go upwards on 4x4 vehicles to the continental ice shelter, along 9.5 km of mountain road where the landscape takes a great geological interest because until recently it was covered by glaciers. From the shelter, we start a 20-minute walk on glacial eroded ground until we reach the Upsala lookout point where you can get extraordinary views of the eastern face of the glacier, Guillermo Lake, southern Patagonian ice, and the Andes Mountains. Then we return to the Estancia on 4x4 vehicles. Note: the order of the activities included in each excursion will be defined by Estancia Cristina. Visitors will have free time between one activity and the other to have lunch (you can hire the lunch service in advance or take your own lunch box).
